TOPIC: DADS WATCH!
DADS WATCH! 9 months, 4 weeks ago

I've been noticing some terrible examples of sterotypes and poor images of fathers in the media lately. My most recent bugbear is the KFC advert. A little girls introduces us to her family "this is my mum, this is my bear, this is my new dad, this is my step sister" etc.
It makes me wonder where the OLD dad is! did they coat him in 11 herbs and spices? Good that they are showing diversity of families, but would the little girl ever say "this is my new mum", I doubt it very much.

I had read somewhere that women make 90% of the family buying decisions, and that advertisers are generally more interested in influencing them than men or dads. In fact, I had heard that one tactic is to "belittle men" in product advertising, because this appeals more to women. Let's hope a more positive role for dads is the one that can be portrayed in the future - perhaps by starting to point this out, as you suggest, we can put pressure on those who dont understand the significance of poor and negative stereotypes in the media.
